hey. most frustrating afternoon of bombs, crashes, and now, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh, keyboard woes. spacebar is weirding out on me. i've typed quite a bit of this entry already. i'll paste it in then do some techtooltypestuff and come back later and fill in the rest of last week's playlist:
just watched a fab short (not that short -- about 7 minutes)Louis Prima in Swing Cats at the great website for the great cable movie channel TCM. from the bobby soxers in it, i'd say it was filmed about '46 or so. which reminds me of one of my all-time favorite movies, "The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer" with cary grant, myrna loy, shirley temple, and ray collins.
since so many people visit this blog after a search for "turkey red damask" (see one of my earliest blog entries), i feel it's my duty to provide some nice links on the subject. a good history can be found at the british site of the Society of Dyers and Colourists' Colour Museum. also, there's a little info on the dye itself at the Quilt Corner at the Cranston Village website (intriguing name, that website!). you might also do a search on "redwork," which is embroidery done in turkey red. quilters will know about that. C&T Publishing's site has a nice article on Redwork, Then and Now. in what seems like a convergence of jazz and fabric history, the Cotton Club site has a small bit on redwork also. and, saving the most thorough and scholarly for last, Meredith Dorner has a well written article on the site of the Northhampton Silk Project entitled Early Dye History And The Introduction of Synthetic Dyes Before The 1870s. have fun!
now for last week's playlist:
