bleh. i'm behind in blogging again. not only that, but this blog entry is only happening b/c i'm avoiding working on my taxes -- the lesser of two evils.

oh, my dear friends, no no, the blog is not evil. but updating playlists is a bit of pressure. but i'm committed to doing it. so here we go. below are playlists for 2 'Coffeetime's and one 'In the Margin of the Other,' in chronological order, most recent first (that being last wednesday's 'Margin').

new rules for how i'll list the Coffeetime playlists: to make this less of of a typing burden, i'll no longer list 'comp' when the song comes from a compilation. i'll just list the song. when one title is listed, that will be the song title and you'll know i got it off a comp of some sort. when two titles are listed, the first will be the album title (and that would mean i used either an orig or a reissue) and the second will be the song.

also, i'll no longer list whether the song was played off of an lp or cd -- that's so nerd anyway. you can pretend my collection comprises *all* original lps or only reissues and comps, whichever you want! (truth is that it's a mix.) and, lastly, i'll only list 'voc:' when the vocalist is not already listed as the artist. bleh.

the playlist for 'Margin' will not list as many discographical details as the Coffeetime playlist. all are female vocals (save for bed and one mistake which shall go unnamed...)

Saturday, March 16, 2002

hey guys, i'm here at the station on a saturday, showing patrick how this blog works! wheeee!

Friday, March 15, 2002

yikes!! sorry about being 'absent' from my own blog. i have been working on a big project in my non-radio life. bleh.

lately a few listeners have asked me where they could get certain songs. the particular songs, as it turns out, were all off of comps (compilations). in each case, i wrote back all the details i had on the song and the comp -- however, the lp comps are pretty much only available in used records stores (if you're lucky to be in the right store at the right time) and aren't necessarily out on cd. i was able to do some sleuthing in one case, and found which available cd had the same material as my lp comp. in another case, the cd comp i used was also oop (out of print), as is the case with many cds from the 80s. but, again, super-web-sleuthing helped me find an available cd comp that had the song in that particular query.

the point is, i realize that when i put the generic word 'comp' down as the title in these playlists, it doesn't help anyone looking to also get that song for their collection. however, in most cases, the title of the comp i used wouldn't help anyway, since so much of my collection has been acquired in used record stores. (also, a reminder: the label i note is *always* the original label the song was recorded on, if i know it. if you ever see an error, please let me know.)

if you want a particular song and you can't find a comp that has it, email me and i'll do what i can to help locate something for you on the web. (you're on your own scouring used records stores. if you don't do that already -- try it!)

and, one last note, if you really want to talk to a deejay that knows labels and where to get certain songs, then you really should be talking to wmbr's charlie kohlhase or jon pollack! as a true 'jazz nerd,' i'm a bit of a failure.

now i'll get right to the missing playlists from the last 3 weeks:

hey there, blog readers. well, here's the playlist for this past tuesday's show. record time for me. (i'm avoiding paying work today.) i've decided to slightly change some of the details i give in the playlist -- i'll no longer list composer if i know it. i often don't. and why keep listing 'rodgers, hart' for some songs but not others they wrote? stuff like that. i will, however, list non-standard composers, personal fave composers, and gershwin (espec 'squared') whenever i feel moved and/or know. what can i say -- it's a quirk.

and, although i may have noted this earlier on in a blog entry, the label i note is always the original label -- sometimes, however, i play from reissues or comps that don't list the original label. if you're looking for a track and see that, for example, the label listed is decca but cannot find a recording with that track for sale -- it may be available on a reissue label. it's detective work.

when ppl ask me where to buy records, i say, if you're in the boston area -- stereo jack's in cambridge; if you're looking online, try amazon or, espec for out-of-print/used items, gemm.com. good luck!

hey all my fine feathered friends. i was going to upload last tuesday's playlist this morning, but, i'm under the weather. i hadn't done it before now b/c i've been very very busy. busy=>>sick. or as charlie kohlhase of wmbr's research & development says, "i'm iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilllllllllllllllllllllllll!!!"

Monday, February 04, 2002

hey. most frustrating afternoon of bombs, crashes, and now, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh, keyboard woes. spacebar is weirding out on me. i've typed quite a bit of this entry already. i'll paste it in then do some techtooltypestuff and come back later and fill in the rest of last week's playlist:

just watched a fab short (not that short -- about 7 minutes)Louis Prima in Swing Cats at the great website for the great cable movie channel TCM. from the bobby soxers in it, i'd say it was filmed about '46 or so. which reminds me of one of my all-time favorite movies, "The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer" with cary grant, myrna loy, shirley temple, and ray collins.

since so many people visit this blog after a search for "turkey red damask" (see one of my earliest blog entries), i feel it's my duty to provide some nice links on the subject. a good history can be found at the british site of the Society of Dyers and Colourists' Colour Museum. also, there's a little info on the dye itself at the Quilt Corner at the Cranston Village website (intriguing name, that website!). you might also do a search on "redwork," which is embroidery done in turkey red. quilters will know about that. C&T Publishing's site has a nice article on Redwork, Then and Now. in what seems like a convergence of jazz and fabric history, the Cotton Club site has a small bit on redwork also. and, saving the most thorough and scholarly for last, Meredith Dorner has a well written article on the site of the Northhampton Silk Project entitled Early Dye History And The Introduction of Synthetic Dyes Before The 1870s. have fun!

now for last week's playlist:

hey ya doin. i've got a big day today, so i'll have to type in yesterday's playlist later. in the meantime, you may enjoy Dismuke's 1920s & 1930s Recordings. his real audio files load pretty quickly and play smoothly and are fun to listen to. i haven't read much of his text, but i believe these are 78s from his own collection. the first two times i tried to access the site and the music, i crashed/froze. however, this was most likely due to my having too many apps open at the time, not anything to do w/ his site. another day, another reboot usually will mend problems you may have getting multimedia links to play. (now i sound like leo!)

Thursday, January 24, 2002

hey. well, here's that promised playlist from jan 15 (recall that on jan 22, coffeetime had a guest host). but, before you look that over, you should go see this incredible site: davidrumsey.com. i saw david rumsey interviewed on 'the screensavers' last night and, for those of you who missed the show or don't watch it or don't get techtv (yow, you poor ppl), you should check this out. he's a map collector and cartographer and he's put a large part of his collection online. you can find maps of your hometown from the 18th century and zoom in so close that you see all the engraver's marks. it amazing! maps are lots of fun and old maps have mystery and romance and art. and, as if this weren't enough, there are globes on the site too. as well as some nifty innovative ways to present the information. check it out.

apologies, i've still not typed in the playlist for a week ago yesterday, er, um, that is, the show of jan15. i iwll do this soon -- promise!

meanwhile, thanks so much to guest host, bob biletch, who did a fine show yesterday (along the theme of 'on them move'). bob got the chance to host coffeetime by donating generously during our fundraiser this past november. and this is the third year he's done that. thanks again bob!

and, since i have your attention, let's all go look at something useful on the web: a page that will spit out as many characters of 'lorem ipsum' as you might need. you don't know why you might need 'lorem ipsum'? well, you would need it if you want some dummy text to put into a page layout you might be designing for someone (or even for yourself), where the actual text may not yet be written. 'lorem ipsum' is some text in latin (or a latin-like fake language -- not being fluent in latin, i really couldn't verify this for you), and it's useful to use as dummy text b/c clients won't try to read it. they'll just see it as a text placeholder and look more at your overall design -- which is what you want them to do. enjoy.

Monday, January 14, 2002

hey there. well, i was going to mention frank blair, who was on the 'today' show for 22 years (they seem to be ignoring him in their 50th birthday celebration) and link his name to a site featuring some interesting facts about him. but google didn't turn up much, so here's a link to a sweet tribute to j fred muggs. someone should really do a webpage tribute to frank blair, though. i will say, at least they included the wonderful edwin newman, even if they did push him to the end of the show.

now for last tuesday's 'coffeetime' playlist.

i apologize, i'm so lame. i owe you two playlists -- and one of them, the one for this past wednesday's 'in the margin of the other,' is pretty durn interesting. so hang on and maybe i'll be good over the weekend.

in the meantime, tonight's 'the screensavers' on techtv had a piece on a laptop band CatFive -- 5 guys sampling in a jamming sort of way on laptops (and one guy was using a Fisher Price turntable). pretty cool.

it's wednesday and i'll be sitting in for sue on 'in the margin of the other' this afternoon, 4 to 6 on wmbr, so give a listen if you're around a radio or computer. as for the playlist to yesterday's coffeetime, well, let's wait a bit. i promise playlists from both shows within days. i promise.

in the meantime, this morning i found this site for info on dogs and cats, greatpets.com. of course, perhaps you have yet to visit these wonderful sites: PETA, HSUS, IFAW, and Farm Sanctuary. not only do these sites have a wealth of important information about the well-being of non-human animals, they are all really well designed and fun to surf through. check 'em out.
