Check out Tee Bosustow’s site dedicated to the brilliant work of the animation studio UPA, home of Mr. Magoo, Gerald McBoing Boing, awesomely evocative, yet leanly abstracted mis-en-scene, and other brilliant creations. You can watch a couple of Gerald Mc BB cartoons at the ToonTracker site, as well as the 1953 animation of Poe's “The Tell-Tale Heart” and James Thurber’s “The Unicorn in the Garden.”

Also, found this super duper site on Elektra records while researching the cover artist Harvey. You need to check out John Glassburner’s site on this cool, surreal guy Harvey. I was pointed to his site a few days ago and the Harvey mystery piqued my inner Nancy Drew. I checked a few of my books on album cover design and, after a bit o’ time on Google/A9, found the Elektra site. A bit of putting 2 and 2 together and I’m wondering whether Bill Harvey, art director at Elektra/Nonesuch and P. Harvey of these crazy Savoy covers were related. I believe Bill Harvey passed away a few years ago, but P. “Dali” Harvey (my nickname) may still be out there. If you have any info on Harvey, email John or me!

March 24th show is now online!

Happy Easter. I hope you got that chocolate bunny you were hoping for. I loved the little baskets w/ that cellophane “grass” when I was a kid. I loved the promise of speckled candy eggs, jelly beans (the real old fashioned kind that had a much fresher sweetness than the modern sort), the eggs we'd colored ourselves the night before, and our brand new white ankle socks. We'd open a pack before dawn, when it was still dark out, getting ready for sunrise services. It hurt, getting up out of a warm bed that early, but it did make the multi-colored sugary day to come that much sweeter. Ankle socks, patent leather mary janes, navy coats with peter pan collars, little hats that gripped our heads, white gloves, and pretty dresses in pastel colors (mine, usually blue) with poofy petticoats underneath so the skirts stuck straight out at 45 degree angles.

Lo-fi Streaming Option:

Hey, I have put a trial version of a “lo-fi” streaming option for last week’s show and, so far, the feedback indicates it is a success. This option if for those on dial up connections. It streams a 24 kbps mp3, which is about one fifth the size of the downloadable 128 kbps mp3.

Soon I’ll put up “lo-fi” options for all the shows.

Also, I’m going to redesign the Coffeetime Archive page soon. I bought some more server space, so I’ll have plenty of room to provide the “hi-fi” downloads and the new “lo-fi” streams. And maybe I’ll finally get around to posting the “ancient” episodes of Coffeetime like I promised.

The streaming option for this week’s show has been fixed, but I’m still going to look into making another streaming option for those who are on dial up -- a low bandwidth option.

Thursday’s show is now available on the Coffeetime Archive, but just the download. The streaming option will come later.

Hi. Last thursday’s show is now up on the Coffeetime Archive. Sorry for the delay -- had kinda a wacky weekend.

I uploaded a full two-hour version; it’s a direct mp3 rip from the WMBR stream. Let me know if there are any drop outs or other problems with it. (I just did a quick spot check and it sounded okay and the whole show is there, plus Alex’s last song. A bonus treat!) When I put a rip like this online, it doesn’t have the sort of ID tags that I put on the other one-hour versions. Here’s how I normally do things:

:: warning: full nerd-out follows::
Normally, I burn the show directly off of the mixing board at the station (using equipment that is a direct result of listener donations -- thanks!). This takes 2 CDs, one for each hour. So there’s usually a teeny gap while I take the CD for hour 1 out of the burner and put in the CD for hour 2. These CDs are direct digital transfers of the show -- in other words, AIFF-quality. When I get home, I rip these 2 CDs into my computer using iTunes, converting them to 128 kbps mp3’s. In the process, I add ID tags so that, if you download the full mp3s (as opposed to streaming), you can do a “Get Info” in iTunes and see the show name, date of broadcast, my name, and the WMBR info.

However, the two-hour stream rips (like the one I just uploaded) don’t have that stuff. Cuz I was in a hurry to get the show online. Cuz I had a wacky weekend!

Besides, my show “burns” (ahem, by that I mean the 2 CDs I burned while I did the show) came out a bit raggedy because I switched control rooms.

good morning. the show went well yesterday. it's peaceful in the station in the heart of a thursday afternoon, much more so than a tuesday evening, that's for sure. and that made it very conducive to playing my snips and snails and petticoats. thanks so much for all the phonecalls. i'm happy some of you can still listen; for those who can't, maybe the Coffeetime Archive will help.

i'll upload yesterday's show to the archive sometime this weekend. and maybe even a playlist. (eeek! i shouldn't make promises…)

one thing i forgot to mention is the new book on Jim Flora written by Irwin Chusid. i am proud that irwin asked me to be a part of the book; it includes a 1990 interview of mine with Jim, a great designer/illustrator/painter who created some of the best jazz album cover designs and who was a hip, smart, warm, and generous man. some album covers from my collection and some sketches that Jim gave me are also reproduced in the book. i'll write a bit more about Jim, the book, and the web gallery at some point in the near future. for now, i need another cup of coffee!

Hey, my dreamy friends -- looks like Coffeetime will be moving next week from Tuesday 4-6pm to Wednesdays 2-4pm.

The show has been on Tues 4-6p ever since its inception in Feb/Mar of 1992, so we almost made it to a baker's dozen years, you and I. No worries, though. We'll have a fresh adventure with our new time together. I hope you can still listen.

I will be asking the program board whether it would be possible to be moved to Thursdays from 2-4p; I think most of my listeners are also avid Jazztrain fans and would be happy if the shows were back-to-back. Plus, to be honest, a Thursdays show would be much easier to deal with in my income-producing worklife. And I'd be keen to be following Alex on the Lost & Found.

However, right now, American Primitive is slated for that slot and, if that stays that way, as a listener, I'd be pysched to listen to Alex, then Jay & PJ, and then Jon. And you and I can still have coffee on Wednesdays at 2. In other words, either way, all will be good.
